SAE indexed connectors are made according to the American SAE standard of the same name. They are most often used to connect flexible piping to fixed parts of machinery. SAE hose couplings can be made of either carbon steel or stainless steel. Stainless steel connectors are non-corrosive and can be used on ships and offshore installations.

SAE standard fittings are very similar in appearance to JIC fittings. These fittings have the same threads as well as thread pitch, but despite the similarity in appearance, the taper angle of the SAE fitting differs from JIC and is 90°. It is therefore necessary to be particularly careful when selecting a fitting, as the fitting fits are not compatible.

The seal at the connection to the mating piece is achieved by taper mating. The SAE connector is universal and can be used with both braided and coiled hoses.
